It's truly sad to see how such a large and important company in the IT sector treats students. The current price of Opus 4.6 is simply unaffordable for students from most countries. The lack of a better model for students will lead to them falling behind in their education and the development of their projects. |

I'm on Student Plan. Actually the Pro plan you probably see could be for Github only, not for Copilot. I'm now on a free 30 days trial for an additional Copilot Pro subscription, you can check it out here: plans Keep Opus for yourselves but at least give us Sonnet back. |

This is not a bug but a confirmed change. GitHub updated the Student Copilot plan on March 12, 2026, removing access to premium models (Claude Opus, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and GPT-5.4) to keep the service free. The auto-switch you experienced is automatic when you try to use a model no longer available on your plan. Your account is working correctly—the models are simply no longer accessible for student accounts. For premium model access, you would need to upgrade to a paid GitHub Copilot Pro subscription. This affects all student accounts globally, not just yours. |

Hi, I'm using Github Copilot Pro, and I'm also facing this issue, seems like the Claude models Sonnet 4.6, Opus 4.6 have disappeared even though I'm using the Pro version? Anyone facing similar issues as well?

Can confirm. I'm on Student Plan, after removal of Sonnet I immediately activated a Copilot Pro trial which includes Sonnet and Opus. Today they are not showing up anymore. Hope the fix is going to be fast. |

I believe that should not be the case, based on their supported models, Sonnet and Opus are included from in the Pro plan, hope this is just a temporary issue

It might not be an issue with your account. Sometimes GitHub temporarily changes model availability in Copilot depending on rollout updates, experiments, or regional availability in VS Code. A few things you could try:
If the model still doesn’t appear, it could be a temporary rollout or service-side change, and it may return after some time. You can also check the GitHub status page or wait for confirmation from the Copilot team. |

I’m seeing the same behavior in VS Code as well.
Claude Sonnet was available earlier but disappeared from the Copilot Chat
model selector. I’m also using Copilot Pro, so it doesn’t seem related to
subscription level.
It might be a temporary backend rollout or model availability change. Has
anyone seen it reappear after restarting VS Code or re-authenticating
Copilot?
Would be helpful if GitHub could confirm whether this is an intentional
change or a temporary issue.

It seems several users are experiencing the same issue where Claude Sonnet
models disappear from the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code.
In some cases this happens when GitHub refreshes model availability or
rolls out changes to Copilot. A couple of things that might be worth trying:
1.
Update the *GitHub Copilot* and *Copilot Chat* extensions in VS Code.
2.
Reload VS Code (Developer: Reload Window).
3.
Sign out and sign back in with GitHub Copilot: Sign Out.
4.
Check the model selector again after restarting VS Code.
Sometimes models temporarily disappear during backend updates or capacity
adjustments. If multiple users are seeing it at the same time, it may be a
platform-side issue rather than a local configuration problem.
It would be helpful if GitHub staff could confirm whether the model
availability has changed or if this is a temporary issue.

Hi,
About 15 minutes ago my GitHub Copilot model in VS Code auto‑switched from Claude Sonnet 4.6 to Auto, and now Sonnet 4.6 no longer appears in the model picker at all. I can still see other Claude models (Sonnet 4, Sonnet 4.5, Opus, etc.), just not Sonnet 4.6.
I’m on the GitHub Student plan (Copilot Pro) and I still have plenty of premium requests remaining, so it doesn’t look like a quota/usage issue. I haven’t changed any settings myself; it just switched on its own and the model vanished from the list.
Is this a known issue or outage with Claude Sonnet 4.6, or is this a bug specific to my account/VS Code setup? Any guidance or confirmation would be appreciated.
