The debug build (node_g) is difficult to install

I have built the debug build from a source clone, but when I try to install it, the release build is installed by default instead. How do I install the debug build?

The debug build isn't really intended to be installed but if you want that, just copy it manually over the release build.

This issue has been inactive for sufficiently long that it seems like perhaps it should be closed. Feel free to re-open (or leave a comment requesting that it be re-opened) if you disagree. I'm just tidying up and not acting on a super-strong opinion or anything like that.
