I'd also like to have this very much. When going through the docs they seem to imply this should be possible

Has something changed and this is possible now (how? couldn't figure it out), or do the docs simply word it in a misleading way and this is not actually supported?

I'm not sure if something has changed, but ProgressLocationWindow doesn't seem to be working. And btw, the location is currently defined as ProgressLocation | {viewId: string} , which means you can put progress in any view you defined.

If you still need withProgress on window/editor itself, I would suggest you to open a feature request (or bug report) in VS Code repo, so the team could take a look and fix it, or update the API/Documentation.
